Information for Parents

Below is a checklist to help parents determine the level of assistance they need and if home care is an option for their child.

  • He/she has a tracheostomy and/or is ventilator dependent.
  • He/she has complex medical needs such as frequent seizures.
  • He/she is oxygen dependent and has documented needs for oxygen therapy.
  • He/she received continuous nutritional feeds through a G-tube or NG tube.

If you are considering home care services for your child, the following may be useful questions to ask in order to choose the best provider for your needs.

Qualifications

  • Is the home care provider licensed by the state?  New York state requires providers to be licensed and reviewed regularly.  Reviews may be available on request through your state health department.
  • What type of employee screening is done?  Can the company provide references?
  • Is the home care provider accredited by a governing agency such as the Joint Commission, an independent group that evaluates and accredits health care organizations and programs?  If so, ask to see the results of the most recent survey.
  • How long has the home care provider been in business?

Quality of care

  • How does the home care provider hire and train caregivers?  Does the company provide continuing education?
  • Are staff specially trained in pediatric care?
  • Are the caregivers licensed and insured?
  • Does a supervisor come to the patient’s home to review the care being given?
  • Does a nurse or therapist conduct an initial visit and review the type of care the patient needs at home?
  • How does the home care provider ensure that each patient’s treatment remains confidential?
  • Does the home care provider have a quality improvement program?
  • Do the home care provider's employees seem friendly and helpful?
  • What is the role of family members?
  • Do you have a rehabilitation team and access to therapists such as speech, physical and occupational therapists?
  • Do you measure client satisfaction?  If so, how and how often?
  • Do you have a 24-hour telephone number if there are any questions or concerns?
